The outdoor spaces around your home get a workout in the area. From summer entertaining on the patio to winter rain drainage, from pool deck traffic to kids' play areas, the hardscape you install needs to look great and perform flawlessly year after year.
Warrens Masonry has been installing pavers and concrete flatwork for over 35 years across Modesto, Ceres, Turlock, Stockton, Oakdale, Tracy, and the wider Central Valley. We handle every phase of the project - from excavation and grading to base preparation, installation, and final edging and sealing. You hire one contractor, and the job gets done right from start to finish.
Our crew understands the Central Valley's expansive soils, drainage patterns, and climate demands. We design and install every paver project with proper base compaction, slope for drainage away from structures, and edge restraints that keep pavers in place for decades. These are not glamorous details - but they are the difference between a patio that looks great at five years and one that is heaving, separating, and growing weeds at five years.

We excavate to the correct depth for the paver thickness plus base layers - typically 6-8 inches total. The subgrade is compacted and graded to direct drainage away from the house and toward appropriate discharge points. No rushing this phase - grade errors show up as pooling water and settling years later.
We install Class II road base compacted in lifts to 95% relative compaction using a plate compactor. This is the most critical step in a durable paver installation. In the Central Valley's clay-heavy soils, a proper base prevents the heaving and settling that causes paver failures. We typically install 4 inches of compacted base for patios and 6 inches for driveways.
A 1-inch screeded bedding sand layer provides a smooth, level setting bed. Pavers are placed in the specified pattern and tapped into place with a rubber mallet. String lines are used throughout to maintain straight courses and consistent joints. Corner and edge cuts are made with a masonry saw for clean, professional results.
After all pavers are placed, we compact the entire surface with a plate compactor, driving joint sand into the gaps and fully seating pavers in the bedding layer. Polymeric joint sand is swept in and compacted, creating a joint that resists weed growth and ant excavation. Rigid plastic or aluminum edge restraints prevent lateral spreading of the paver field at all exposed edges.
Both are excellent materials. Here is how to decide which is right for your specific project in the area.
Pool decks: Pavers are almost always the right choice around pools. Individual units can be lifted to access plumbing and conduit without demolition. They stay cooler underfoot in the summer sun when lighter colors are used. They do not crack from the thermal cycling of pool water chemistry changes the way concrete can. And when one cracks or stains from a chemical spill, you replace one paver, not the whole deck.
Driveways: Paver driveways flex slightly under vehicle weight rather than cracking. They handle the oil and chemical drips that plague concrete driveways. They look dramatically better than gray concrete, which matters for curb appeal and home value. And they can be patched invisibly if a utility company ever cuts through for underground work - a concrete driveway cut is never the same.
Entertainment areas: A paver patio creates a finished, intentional outdoor room that feels like an extension of the home. The variety of patterns, colors, and edge treatments available with pavers far exceeds anything achievable in poured concrete.
Large utility areas: For a basic apron, a back alley, or a utilitarian parking pad, standard broom-finish concrete is cost-effective and gets the job done. We pour and finish concrete to the same standard we hold everything else to - proper subbase, adequate thickness, correctly placed control joints.
Budget-constrained projects: When budget is the primary constraint, concrete gets more square footage for less cost. We are transparent about this in every estimate and help clients make the decision that makes sense for their situation, not the one that generates more revenue for us.
Stamped concrete alternative: Stamped and colored concrete gives you a decorative surface at a price point between plain concrete and pavers. It mimics stone, brick, and wood patterns effectively. It does require sealing every 3 to 5 years to maintain color and weather resistance, but for many applications it is an excellent middle-ground choice.
We install both pavers and concrete flatwork, so we have no financial reason to push you one direction. We give every client an honest recommendation based on their specific use case, budget, and long-term goals. Call (209) 204-8673 and we will talk through which makes sense for your project before you commit to either.
The Central Valley is one of California's most active markets for residential paver installation. The region's outdoor living culture - driven by 260+ sunny days per year and strong backyard entertainment traditions - means patio and driveway upgrades are consistently among the top home improvement investments in Stanislaus and San Joaquin Counties.
In newer subdivisions in Tracy, Manteca, and East Modesto, upgrading builder-grade concrete with premium pavers is one of the most common first-year homeowner projects. In established neighborhoods in Turlock and Oakdale, pool deck replacements and patio additions are steadily in demand. And for Stockton commercial properties, permeable paver installations are increasingly required to meet stormwater management standards.
We install paver products from the region's leading suppliers. For interlocking concrete pavers, we work with Belgard, Boral, and locally sourced alternatives depending on the project requirements. For natural stone, we source California Gold flagstone, Bluestone, Santa Barbara Sandstone, Arizona Flagstone, and river stone from regional quarry suppliers.
Our material selection process is straightforward: we match the material to the application. A pool deck needs non-slip texture and good thermal properties. A driveway needs dimensional stability under vehicle weight. A garden path can use irregular flagstone that would be impractical in a high-traffic area. We guide every client through this selection based on how they will actually use the space, not which product has the highest margin.
